I recently got a Canon EOS R5 mirrorless camera and am looking for a good RF lens to shoot photos of my active dog. I mostly take pictures outdoors in the backyard and at the dog park. Any recommendations on a versatile lens that would work well for pet photography? Thanks!

I'd highly recommend the Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM lens for dog photography. Here's why I think it works well:

  • 500mm reach lets you capture shots from a distance so you don't distract or startle the dogs. This is especially helpful for capturing natural poses and expressions.

  • The 100-500mm zoom range gives you a lot of compositional flexibility. You can zoom out for environmental portraits or zoom in to focus just on faces and details.

  • Impressive close focusing distance of 3.2 ft at 500mm allows you to get some great intimate portraits and close-ups.

  • Optical image stabilization provides up to 6 stops of correction which helps offset camera shake when shooting at long focal lengths or fast moving subjects.

  • Fast and virtually silent autofocus paired with excellent AF tracking keeps pace with energetic dogs.

  • Weather sealed design makes it durable for outdoor shooting.

It's not the most affordable lens but delivers excellent image quality and versatility for dog photography. The flexibility to go from wide environmental shots to tight portraits without swapping lenses is invaluable. Just watch out for dog nose smudges on the front element!

Based on your needs for photographing an active dog outdoors, I would recommend looking into the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens.
